More than three out of every four toothpastes available in the Bangladeshi market contain harmful microplastics, according to a year-long study by the Environment and Social Development Organization (ESDO). Out of 34 samples tested across 19 local and imported brands, microplastics were detected in 26 samples—accounting for 76.5 percent of the total tested.

At a coordination meeting titled “Strategic Economic Diplomacy and Export Expansion for Bangladesh’s Jute Sector”, jointly organized today in Dhaka by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Textiles and Jute, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ms. Shama Obaed Islam, MP and State Minister for Textiles and Jute Mr. Md. Shariful Alam announced the formation of a Joint Working Group between the two Ministries and the organization of an International Jute Expo in the near future with a renewed global outlook. The meeting was attended by the Secretaries of both Ministries, senior government officials, and representatives from the Department of Jute, the jute industry, research institutions, and development partner organizations.At the outset of the meeting, the Hon'ble State Minister for Foreign Affairs reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to revitalizing the jute sector and underscored the importance of organizing Jute and Jute Products Exhibitions to restore the glory of the country’s “golden fibre.” She placed particular emphasis on leveraging economic diplomacy, with the active support of Bangladesh Missions abroad, to promote the development of the jute industry.
